PT Health Academy - physical therapy - Roxanne Meldrum

Hello! I’m Roxanne Meldrum

PT/ATC

Growing up in southeastern Michigan, my career began in High School, spending four years as the boys’ basketball student athletic trainer. I continued this path, attending the University of Toledo, earning a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and becoming Certified (ATC) in 1994. I continued my higher level education by attending the Medical College of Ohio and graduating in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy. My first job out of college was at a small community hospital in rural Ohio. I’ve worked in outpatient orthopedics from the start,  moving to New Hampshire in 1998.  In 2008, I completed a fellowship in manual therapy at the Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy in Woburn, Massachusetts. I have experience working with a wide variety of orthopedic injuries in patients of all ages. I have taught in a variety of settings including working as a lab instructor for Physical Therapy classes at the University of Findlay and teaching Pregnancy in Motion classes at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. Currently, I teach aquarobics (aerobics in deep water) classes at Hampshire Hills Athletic Club. I’ve been a guest speaker for garden clubs, quilting groups, and a Parkinson’s group, teaching on a variety of topics. And I teach virtual and in person workshops focused on injury management and prevention.

My areas of clinical interest include low back and neck pain, foot and ankle mechanics, dance and sports medicine, teaching healthy movement patterns, and injury prevention.

As an orthopedic Physical Therapist since 1996, my experience has taught me that while Physical Therapy is an effective approach to find the cause of pain and treat it, Physical Therapy’s most powerful benefit is the effective correction of body mechanics to make the wholistic changes necessary to prevent reinjury.   Therefore, I started PT Health Academy to offer a novel approach to care, emphasizing instruction of proper mechanics to prevent common injuries from daily tasks or exercise. Contact me today to see what Physical Therapy can offer you.

To give you more options for care, I now have appointments available within Synergy Acupuncture and Wellness at 1 Overlook Drive, Suite 14 in Amherst.

A higher level of service

  • Immediate care because I don’t need a referral or insurance authorization (which can take up to two weeks) to work with you.
  • One on one care with the same Physical Therapist every treatment.
  • Appropriate care based on your condition and needs, not what insurance companies dictates. Often, just one hour long appointment per week vs. 2-3 times per week recommended by typical clinic care.
  • Along with exercise handouts, I also provide a written review of any recommendations or information we covered together so you are always clear on what to accomplish between sessions.
  • I’m always available to you through our patient portal if you have questions or are having trouble between visits. I appreciate updates to ensure you are making the progress you expect between appointments.

What can you expect from Physical Therapy with PT Health Academy?

Your first session will start with a thorough evaluation with an explanation of findings.  Then I’ll teach you any self management or activity modification strategies that will help you make immediate improvement in your symptoms.

Physical Therapy treatment consists of (1) education (ie. proper lifting technique, how to protect your injury, etc.), (2) exercise prescription, and (3) hands on techniques including massage, joint mobilization, and stretching. My approach is uniquely mechanical thanks to my year long fellowship training at the Institute for Manual Therapy in Woburn, Mass. This training gives me the skills to assess and treat abnormal limitations or excess movement/instability in joints that might be contributing to pain or injury.

Have Low Back Pain?

How I can help your low back pain when you want to get back to activities:
  • Thorough evaluation getting to the cause of why you hurt and learning what factors are contributing and need to be addressed.
  • Self management techniques – learn what to do when symptoms flare.
  • Body mechanics instruction – learn how to move in ways that use the back the way it was designed (i.e. squat vs. bend) to protect structures trying to recover and develop healthy back habits.
  • Treatment of symptoms – utilizing various techniques including joint mobilization, massage, and traction to promote a faster recovery.
  • Exercise prescription – a personalized program to address deficits (including weakness, shortened muscles, coordination dysfunction) contributing to the problem.
  • Home Program Recommendations – therapy strategies you use at home to get you moving and feeling better faster.

There is no other profession appropriately trained and licensed to offer this comprehensive approach.

"Roxanne was able to help me immediately when I was barely able to move and walk from my lower back pain few months ago. Learned a lot from her on proper ways of moving to minimize stress on my back. To this day I follow her guidance every time getting in and out of car, sitting, and lifting. She is my 1st go to person for therapy."

Maz A.

"Roxanne is wonderful! She has helped both myself and my daughter, who is a high school athlete. Roxanne was wonderful to work with. For my daughter, once she graduated from her PT sessions, Roxanne came up with a home exercise plan to help my daughter continue strengthen her injured ankle not only to help get her back to playing volleyball, but to also help prevent any further injuries. My daughter was able to return to playing volleyball earlier than we had expected and we believe it was due to her having such a great Physical Therapist and HEP. For myself, I have a history of shoulder pain. Even during the pandemic, Roxanne was able to quickly provide a telehealth appointment in which she helped determine the root of the pain and provided me with some exercises and tips on how to help relieve my pain. She is extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. My teenage daughter also enjoyed working with her and appreciated her sense of humor and her knowledge of the sport of volleyball. Highly recommend Roxanne!"

Karen D.

"Excellent experience! Roxanne is very knowledgeable and helpful."

Stephanie S.

"Roxanne is helping me improve my overall fitness. I recommend that, if you are considering the same or are looking for a physical therapist, you should contact Roxanne. Why you ask? Several reasons. First, subject knowledge. If you review her videos, especially last July when she posted on per day, you will see that she is very knowledgeable about the subjects that she speaks about. Second, communication skills. It's great when someone has vast knowledge, but worthless if they can't communicate that to you. Roxanne was able to explain things to me in more than one way until I had a thorough understanding. Also, her explanations are not dry, technical jargon, but words that non-medical folks understand. I will also say that she has a pretty good sense of humor. If you can put a smile on someone's face while you are convincing them of the benefits of exercise, your communications skills are top notch! Next, I would say integrity. I have absolute confidence that if Roxanne was presented with an issue that was beyond her skill level, she would refer you to someone who could help. Finally, caring. In my opinion, Roxanne cares for and about her patients. She will do whatever she can to develop a program so that they will succeed at their goals. Admittedly this is long. Executive summary? Roxanne is great!"

Bryan C.

"I was one of a lucky group of 5 that had the privilege of working out under the expert mentorship of Roxanne. My wife and I are entering retirement, but determined not to go gently into that good night. Enter Roxanne and PT Health Academy, teaching us a range of exercises that will stretch our muscles, deepen our respiration, and maintain our balance. We're delighted! Check this wonderful service out!"

Rande N.

"I liked your no pressure approach and attention to each participant's limitations/individual needs (like my ankle) and being taught how to do each exercise the correct way (pelvic neutral, posture etc). I like the fact that you are focusing on prevention (balance as people get older, better posture) while providing a routine that is a well rounded workout that people of all ages can do. I feel it is a very practical class because the exercises each serve a purpose to keep you fit and are designed prevent/minimize future problems."

Bonnie E.

"Yes, the workshop met my expectations. Instructions were clear, exercises repeated and paperwork provided."

Meg C.

"Thanks for a great class! You were patient, understanding & knowledgeable about my knee pain."

Ann M.

"Thank you for the class. It was helpful to learn proper technique and exercises to do in the pool. It was also great to learn about the benefits of working out in water."

Dawn S.

"I loved the program. I had already been doing a version of some of what you showed us, but this was helpful so that I could refine my technique and therefore have better results and less pain. The best thing about it was your explanation regarding WHY this all helps. the discussion of the "neutral" posture and what happens w/ slight flexion or extension was really helpful - I like to know how things work and why I'm doing something, so that made it fit together for me."

Mary C.

"I wanted to know some safe ways to move in the water that would encourage my back to get stronger. Also maybe help it feel better when aggravated or just sore after a long day. You explained really clearly how to do each exercise, the goal, the details of how to move your body and where to feel it. What to expect from recovery, what's tolerable limits of discomfort. And you looked to see how each of us was doing an exercise."

Jeanne N.

"Great lower back pain workshop. Expectations met - really exceeded. Much advice I could use right away. Practical ways to move through your typical day with chores."

Daryl J.

"...very practical and informative. It was a relief to learn that I can make simple changes That will at least control my pain And possibly prevent further deterioration."

Karen M.

"Roxanne is very knowledgeable and has helped me, my husband and son with our back, shoulder and knee issues. She has given us great advice and is a wealth of information about preventing and treating injuries and proper exercises. She's the best PT around!"

Rhonda B.

"...more than exceeded my expectations because the demonstrations were very effective and the handout provided useful exercises."

Anthony F.

"I have taken several mini workshops with Roxanne on shoulders, back and knees and am very impressed with her knowledge and her practical solutions to improving quality of life. I highly recommend you give her a try!"

Beth D.

Roxanne is committed and passionate about training her clients on how to maintain and build strength, balance and flexibility in order to maintain quality of life. Through her years of experience as a rehab therapist she know the consequences of the ways we function that can lead to physical problems. I think the expression "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" sums up the motive behind much of what Roxanne is teaching. I highly recommend her classes and personal consultations."

Lynn S.

"Best PT Ever! Roxanne Meldrum is a capable and professional physical therapist who invests in the best outcomes for her clients. I have worked with many PT specialists over the years and Ms. Meldrum is the one practitioner who has made a difference in my physical health. I highly recommend her."

Mary C.

"Roxanne was part of my care team when we decided to attempt to repair an old lower back injury without surgery. As my Physical Therapist, she worked with my chiropractor and personal trainer to design a care plan that has worked exceptionally well. Roxanne provided detailed information about the progress of my care in easy to understand language and today I am free from lower back and Sciatic pain for the first time in decades. I can't speak highly enough about her expertise and her professionalism."

Stephen T.

"Roxanne Meldrum, PT/ATC has taken great care of me and my injured shoulder. She really understands the mechanics of the body and works with your abilities and work / home schedules to design a recovery program you can stick to and get better with. Her rates are very comparable to your co-pays at the PT clinic and she will come to your house to work with you! This is a lot better than the PT clinics being backed up for weeks, making you wait to be pain free. Why wait?! Call PT Health Academy today, or watch her excellent videos on her website and start feeling better today!"
